HARRIOTT SOUTHBY

THE LATE MRS. SOUTHBY
Our obituary column to-day contains the announcement of the death of Mrs. Harriott Southby, widow of the late Mr. John Head Southby, who was both owner and occupier of land at West Ilsley, whence the family removed in 1860.
The Southbys are one of the oldest Berkshire families, having been able to trace their descent to John Southby, who purchased the manor of Carswell in the parish of Buckland of Sir John Fettiplace in 1577. His grandson, John Southby sat for the county in the Cromwellian Parliaments of 1654-56, and his son Richard sat for the county in the Parliaments of 1680-81-85. The Southbys also twice served the office of high sheriff of Berkshire, 1695 and 1702, and have connected themselves by marriage with the families of Keate of Lockinge, Wiseman of Steventon, Mayott of Abingdon, Head of Hodcott, and Gallial of Yattendon. They have moreover been distantly connected with the Barons Hungerford.
The lady who died on Tuesday at her residence, Donnington-square, at the age of 82, had lived in Newbury 34 years and her removal will be deplored by a wide circle of friends.

The funeral will take place on Saturday, at half-past three, at the cemetery.
