Edward George Elliott 1893 - 1894
Edward Elliott was born in Newbury in 1850 the son of Henry and Jane, nee West, Elliott. Both his parents died in December 1855 and were buried in Newtown Road Cemetery. Edward was in the Newbury Union Workhouse in the 1861 census but after that no trace of him until he married Ada Jane Bennett on 27 April 1891 at St John in Newbury. Ada was baptized on 12 October 1862 at St Mary in Thatcham, the daughter of William and Emily. In the 1891 census she was recorded as an inmate of Newbury Union Workhouse and a charwoman along with her daughter Edith aged two. It seems very likely that Edward and Ada met in the Workhouse.
A son Edward George Elliott was born 29 March 1893 in Newbury. He was baptized on 26 June 1893 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Edward was recorded as a labourer.
Edward George died 19 May 1894 aged thirteen months and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 May 1894.
An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 24 May 1894 which read:-
ELLIOTT May 18, at 5 Percy Place, Newbury, Edward George Elliott, aged 13 months.
In the 1901 census Edward & Ada with children Edith aged 12, Arthur aged 5 and Annie aged 3 were all recorded Newbury Union Workhouse. James was recorded as a general labourer.
It appears Edward spent the rest of his life in the Workhouse dying in it on 22 March 1935 and he was buried at Shaw Cemetery on 25 March 1935.
In the 1911 Ada Jane Lansdell was recorded at 92 Grenfell Road in Maidenhead with her son Arthur Sidney Elliott aged 15 and daughter Annie Elliott aged 13. Ada was recorded as a charwoman and Arthur as a baker’s errand boy. Ada died Q3 1918 in Maidenhead.
