Biographical Information

The articles below contain information about Elizabeth Hazell.

Elizabeth Hazell 1828-1894

Elizabeth Hazell

1828-1894

Elizabeth was baptised on the 12th October 1828 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of David and Mary Chivers (nee Jones) who were married on the 22nd October 1826 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Elizabeth’s father David was a Labourer. He was baptised on the 9th September 1798 in Winterbourne Bassett, Wiltshire, the son of William and Edith Chivers (nee North), who were married on the 26th December 1793 in Winterbourne Bassett. David died aged 69 in 1865, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st August.

Her mother was baptised on the 13th August 1800 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Jones (nee King), who were married on the 24th January 1799 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Mary died aged 64 in 1865, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th January.

David and Mary also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Frederick 27th July 1827

Richard 10th January 1830

Mary Ann 22nd April 1832

Martha 2nd March 1834

John 13th September 1835

Eliza 26th February 1837

William 4th November 1838

James 26th July 1840

David born in 1842 (no baptism found yet!)

In 1841 Elizabeth (13) was living in Quaker’s Burial Ground, Cheap Street, Newbury with her parents and siblings.

The 1851 census records Elizabeth (22) living in Winterbourne Bassett, Wiltshire, with her grandmother Edith Chivers (70), and her cousins, William North (17) and Caroline Ash (19). All four were recorded as Agricultural Labourers.

In 1861 Elizabeth (31) was working as a Laundress, she was living in Knight’s Yard, Cheap Street, Newbury with her parents, her brother James (20) and her two nephews, Richard Chivers (8) and a Charles Chivers (4).

Elizabeth married Charles Hazell in 1865 (marriage registered in Newbury)

No children found for this couple. *** (see below)

The 1871 census records Elizabeth (41) as a Sawyer’s Wife, living at 3 Mayors Lane, Newbury. Also recorded living with her were her two nieces Louisa Boyer (6) and Ada Boyer (4) (daughters of her sister Eliza and her husband William). (Elizabeth’s surname recorded as Hagele on ancestry). Her husband Charles (27) was recorded as a Sawyer, lodging at the College Arms, Pamber End, Hampshire.

In 1881 Charles (37) was working as a Sawyer, he was living in Greenham Fields, Greenham Elizabeth (50) a Laundress and a son David C Hazell (7)***

The 1891 census records Charles (47) as a Carman, living at Cromwell Cottage, Greenham, Berkshire with Elizabeth (62) and their son David Hazell (17)*** an Assistant Carman.

(No birth registration found for David C Hazell born c1874. There is however a birth registration for a David Charles Chivers, mother’s maiden name Berry in the March quarter 1874. Elizabeth’s brother David married Henrietta Berry in the June quarter 1874 in Newbury. David was in the Military. Henrietta and David do not appear in the 1881 census. There are these three overseas baptisms for their children: William John, 25th November 1875, Henry James, 7th March 1877 (both in Gibraltar) and Arthur Frederick George, 12th June 1881 (in Barbados) so the David C. Hazell recorded as Charles and Elizabeth’s son looks to be Elizabeth’s nephew David Charles Chivers)

Elizabeth was widowed in 1893, Charles died aged 50 on the 12th November, he was laid to rest in a consecrated private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th November.

Elizabeth died aged 65 the following year, on the 24th April, she was laid to rest with her husband on the 27th April 1894.
