Jane Doggett

c1832-1894

Jane was baptised on the 24^th June 1832, in Bedwyn Magna, Wiltshire, the daughter of Henry (a Labourer) and Hannah Newman (nee Bell) of East Grafton, Wiltshire. Henry and Hannah were married on the 21^st July 1831 in Great Bedwyn.

Jane’s father Henry was baptised on the 29^th December 1811, in Burbage, Wiltshire, the illegitimate son of Mary Newman. Henry died aged 66 in 1878. He was buried on the 13^th April in East Grafton.

Her mother Hannah was born c1799 in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. She died aged 74 in 1873 and was buried on the 17^th November in East Grafton.

Jane had a brother George, who was baptised on the 3^rd April 1835 in Bedwyn Magna. George died aged 11 weeks. He was buried on the 9^th June in Bedwyn Magna.

The 1841 census records Jane (9) living in East Grafton, with her father Henry (30) an Agricultural Labourer.

The 1851 census records Jane (19) living in East Grafton, with her father Henry (39) an Agricultural Labourer and her mother Hannah (51).

(Charles was baptised on the 19^th June 1831, in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the son of James (a Labourer) and Mary (nee Masum) Dogwood of Wexcombe.  James Dogwood married Mary Masum in Great Bedwyn on the 18^th December 1820. The family surname had changed from Dogwood to Doggett by 1841).

James, 23^rd March 1855 (died aged 49 in 1905, buried in the NRC on the 10^th January)

Henry Edward, privately baptised 23^rd May 1857 (died aged 3 months, buried 8^th August in East Grafton)

Charles William, baptised (as William) 8^th December 1858, (died aged 22, on the 28^th January 1881, whilst serving a prison sentence in Reading, Berkshire, buried 31^st January at London Road Cemetery, Reading)

Frederick Henry, born 1861, in Newbury (died aged 48 in 1909, buried in the NRC on the 19^th August)

Albert Alfred, born 1864, in Newbury

Mary Jane, born 1866, in Newbury (died aged 3 years 11 months, buried in the NRC on the 19^th March 1870, recorded on the burial register as Jane Dockett)

Tom George, born 1868, in Newbury (died aged 1 year 4 months, buried in the NRC on the 5^th January 1870, mistakenly recorded as John George Doppett on the burial register)

The 1861 census records Charles (29) a Brewer’s Labourer, Jane (29), Eliza (8), James (6) and Charles William (2), living at 5 Kimber’s Yard, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1871 Charles (39) a Brewer’s Labourer, Jane (39), James (16), a Groom, Charles (12), Frederick (9) and Albert (6), were living at 22 Shaw’s Lane, Newbury.

Charles (49) a Brewer’s Man, Jane (49), Frederick (19), a Labourer, Albert (16), a Labourer and Sidney (8) were living in West Mills, Newbury in 1881.

The 1891 census records Charles (59), a Maltster, Jane (59) a Needlewoman, Frederick (29), a Labourer and Sidney (18), a Labourer, living at 7 Dine’s Buildings, Newbury.

Jane died aged 62 on the 3^rd April 1894. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th April.

Charles died aged 66 on the 20^th January 1898. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24^th January.
