James Underwood
1846-1893
James was born in Milford, Derbyshire, he was baptised on the 5th July 1846 in Milford, the son of John (a Framework Knitter) and Sarah Underwood (nee Bannister) who were married on the 22nd June 1840 at St Peter Radford, Nottinghamshire.
His father John was previously married to Sarah Irving in 1829 in Duffield Derbyshire. They had the following three children:
William Iving (Irving) baptised 30th December 1830 at St Alkmunds Derby
Caroline and Clara baptised 28th August 1836 at St Peter Derby
Sarah died aged 29, she was buried on the 21st February 1840 at St Lawrence, Heanor, Derbyshire. (Burial record records her abode as Nottingham)
James’s mother Sarah was born on the 11th October 1817 in Derbyshire she was baptised on at St Werburgh Derby the daughter of James (a Framework Knitter) and Henrietta Bannister (nee Mason) who were married on the 8th October 1810 at St Werburgh Derby.
John and Sarah also had the following children:
John born 1841 in Belper
Henrietta born c1843 in Belper Derby
Emma born 1844 in Milford Derby
Sarah died aged 30 in 1847 and John remarried again the following year, his 3rd wife was Mary Ann Jenison.
The 1851 census records James (4) living in Sunny Hill, Belper, Derby with his father John (48), a Silk Glove Maker, his step-mother Mary (38), his half siblings William (20), Caroline (16) and Clara (14), his brother John (9), his sisters Henrietta (8) and Emma (6) and his step-brother Reuben Jenison (6).
In 1861 James (13) was working as a Framework Knitter, he was living in Castle Orchard, Duffield, Derby with his father John (58), a Framework Knitter, his step-mother Mary (49), his brother John (20), his sister Emma (15) and a William A Underwood (5) (recorded as the son of John but in the 1871 census records William as James’s nephew).
James married Eliza Phoebe Coope at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Derby in 1870.
They had the following children:

William Coope 1875 in Belper
Female child c1877 in Belper (died without being given a name in 1877)
Frederick c1879 in Derby
Harry Vincent 1881 in Derby (died 1881)
Ethel Mary 1882 in Derby
The 1871 census records James (24) as a Fitter, living in Grange Lane, Litchurch, Derbyshire. Also recorded living with him was his father John (70), a Grocer and his nephew William (15) a Fitter. (Eliza and their 1month old daughter Alice were recorded living with Eliza’s mother Mary A Coope (65) in King Street, Duffield, Derbyshire).
In 1881 the family were living at 129 Osmaston Road, Litchurch, Derbyshire. John (33) was now working as an Agent for the Prudential Assurance Company.
The 1891 census records James (43) as a Superintendent at the Prudential Assurance Company. The family were living at 64 Sunnyside Villa, Oxford Road, Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
James died aged 46 on the 3rd December 1893, he was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th December.
His widow Eliza Phoebe died aged 48 on the 12th August 1897 in Derbyshire.
