The funeral of this gentleman, whose decease we recorded last week, took place on Thursday afternoon. The first portion of the Burial Service was conducted in St John's Church, the vicar (the Rev. R. Dunn) officiating, and the Rev. F.C. Gosling (of Newtown) assisting. Various portions of the service were chorally rendered, the hymn "Hark, hark my soul," being sung. The grave was lined with moss and white chrysanthemums, and the coffin was covered with floral emblems. At the conclusion of the service at the graveside the choir sang the beautiful hymn, "There is a blessed home beyond this land of woe." Both at the church and the cemetery a number of the leading townsmen were present, together with the Rev. H.H. Skrine, vicar of Greenham. The mourners were:- Miss Asprey, Mrs. Francis Asprey, Mr. Edward Asprey, Mr. Frank Asprey, Rev. S.G. Collison, Rev. C. Fison, Mr. George Fison, Rev. T. Transciption: | JAMES ASPREY DEATH OF MR. JAMES ASPREY. —By the death of Mr. James Asprey, of Sandleford Grove, a familiar figure will be missing from agricultural circles. Although Mr. Asprey had reached the patriarchal age of 82, his upright figure and cheery voice would scarcely allow one to believe he had long passed the allotted age of men. Mr. Asprey had lived at Sandleford Grove for many years, and up to within two years ago was one of the most regular and best known men at the Newbury market. He was widely respected as a man of the strictest integrity, and always known to be honourable in his dealings. He exercised a genuine benevolence amongst his poorer neighbours, by whom he will be greatly missed. Three weeks ago Mr. Asprey sustained a paralytic stroke, from the effects of which he expired on Saturday. The funeral takes place to-day (Thursday) at Newbury Cemetery, the first part of the service being conducted at St. John's Church at three o'clock.
