Jane Geater
1840-1893
Jane was born on the 8th November 1840, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 3rd January 1841, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of John and Martha Geater (nee Hazell) who were married on the 7th November 1837, at St Niclas Newbury.
Jane’s father John was a Bricklayer. He was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Lawrence and Mary Geater (nee Blackman) who were married on the 29th July 1811, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Both were from Newbury)
Her mother Martha was born on the 23rd October 1815, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 15th November 1815, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hazell. William Hazell married Elizabeth Baker on the 1st November 1812, at St Nicolas, Newbury. (Both were widowed)
Jane’s siblings were:
Ellen, baptised 28th April 1844 (born 3rd April)
John Thomas, baptised 31st May 1846 (born 19th April)
Emma, baptised 29th October 1848 (born 21st Sept.)
In 1841 Jane (5 months) was recorded living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury, with her parents.
The 1851 census also records Jane (10), living in Old Newtown Road with her parents and siblings.
In 1861 Jane (22) was working as a House Servant, at Beenham Lodge, Beenham, Berkshire, for John and Sophia Kymer.
By 1871 Jane (30) was working as a Dressmaker. She was back living with her parents and her brother John, in Old Newtown Road, Newbury.
The 1881 census also records Jane (40) as a Dressmaker, living in Old Newtown Road, with her parents.
Jane died aged 52 on the 24th November 1893, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th November.
