The articles below contain information about Alice Dolton.
ALICE DALTON
Alice was the youngest of seven children born to James & Ester Dolton in 1853 at Aldermaston, Berkshire. She was baptised on 14 August 1853.
In the 1861 census she was living with her widowed mother & eleven-year-old brother, Charles, in a cottage on the Aldermaston Park Estate. Both her father & grandfather had worked on the estate as agricultural labourers for several years.
No record of Alice has been found in the 1871 census.
In 1881 Alice was a live-in General Domestic Servant for Stephen Knight & his family in Cheap Street, Newbury. Stephen was a Tinplate worker & employed two boys.
By 1891 Stephen was now an Ironmonger & Mayor of Newbury who was living at Holland House, Greenham, Newbury. Alice had moved with the family & was unmarried.
Alice died on 10 November 1893 & was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 15 November following a service at St John the Evangelist.
Her death was reported in the Reading Mercury on Saturday 11 November 1893 plus four other local newspapers later that week (see below).
Dolton - On November 10th, at Holland house, Newbury, Alice Dolton. Aged 39 years
This announcement was probably arranged by her employer as Stephen was granted Probate at Oxford (see below) with her effects coming to £19 3s. It might be assumed that she had been a respected member of staff.
