South slope of copestone: Also John Edward Basing/ who died June 18th. 1881/ in his 47th year./ Also Richard Basing/ who died September 6th. 1893 aged 62 years. South face of pedestal: James George Mathews died Nov. 2nd. 1948. East slope of copestone: Also Annie Mathews/ who died/ June 21st. 1902/ aged 46 years. East face of pedestal: Martha A.W. Transciption: | RICHARD BASING Death of Mr. Richard Basing. - The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mr. Richard Basing, who had been in impaired health for some months back. Mr. Basing, in conjunction with his late brother, carried on the old-established business of saddler and harness maker, in the Market-place. |

Transciption: | RICHARD BASING The Funeral of the late Mr. Richard basing, of the Market-place, took place on Monday afternoon at Newbury Cemetery. The rector officiated. The mourners were Mrs. Mathews (sister), Mr. and Mrs. Mathews, Mr. Mathews (Oare); and among the friends present at the grave-side were Mr. and Mrs. W.Balding, Mr.Freemantle, Mr. G. J. Cosburn, Mr. F. Cosburn, Mr.Kemp, Mr. Haydon, &c. The coffin was covered with a number of beautiful floral wreaths. There then follows a list of those who sent wreaths. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Richard Canning. |
