Elizabeth Lamdin

Elizabeth Simms was born about 1826 in St Mary Bourne, the daughter of William and Eliza(beth). In 1851 she can be found in Aldermaston, working as a servant to Joseph John Brown a farmer of 168 acres, his wife and two children. The 1861 census has her living at 5, Trafalgar Place Newbury, the wife of Thomas Lamdin.

Thomas was born about 1810 in Newbury. In 1851 he was living at Union Chapel Yard Newbury as a widower. He had married his first wife, Vashti, on 20th October 1833 at St Nicholas Church in Newbury. I have been unable to find any children for this marriage. Vashti died in February 1851 and was I believe buried at St Nicholas.

Thomas married Elizabeth on 5th Dec 1852, again at St Nicholas. They had 4 children, one being William Thomas (grave NA 10). Three were baptised at the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Newbury. Thomas was living at 5, Trafalgar Place Newbury in both 1861 and 1871, when his job was given as grocer’s porter. My information shows he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 3rd August 1871 but his grave appears to be unmarked.

Elizabeth continued to live in Trafalgar Place after Thomas’s death although she had moved a few doors to number 12 by 1881, when she was working as a laundress. In 1891 she is still at number 12, and still working as a laundress.

Elizabeth Lamdin was buried on 17th July 1893 aged 66 years.
