Elizabeth Mary Purdue
1873-1936
Elizabeth Mary was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Edmund and Eliza Purdue (nee Chappell) who were married on the 24th November 1864 at All Saints, Paddington, Middlesex.
Her father Edmund was baptised on the 21st May 1823, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of George & Mary Purdue (nee Cook) who married on the 5th February 1823 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
Edmund was a Carpenter. He married his 1st wife, Ann Everest (born c1812 Headley Surrey) in 1845.
Elizabeth Mary’s half siblings were:
David William Everest born 1840 (Ann’s illegitimate son)

Alfred 1852-1856 (buried 9/4/1856 in the Newtown Road Cemetery)
Mary Ann 1854-1855 (buried 26/10/1855 in the Newtown Road Cemetery)
Edmund was widowed in 1862, Ann died aged 50. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Cemetery on the 26th December.
Her mother Eliza was baptised on the 18th December 1831, in Berkley, Gloucestershire, the daughter of George, a Chaise Driver (the driver of a two wheeled carriage called a chaise) and Elizabeth Chappell, of Newport, Gloucestershire.

In 1871 Edmund (48), a Journeyman Carpenter, Eliza (39), William George (24) a Bookbinders Finisher, George (4), Thomas (2) and Arthur (8 months), were living in Railway Terrace, Newbury.
The 1881 census records Edmund (58), Eliza (49) and their children, George (14), unemployed, Elizabeth Mary (8) and John (5), living at 8 Railway Terrace, Newbury.
Her father Edmund died aged 77 on the 28th October 1900, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st November.
In 1891 Elizabeth Mary (18) was recorded working as a Housemaid, at 1 Porchester Villas, Newtown Road, Newbury, for a widow, Sophia Simmons (66) and her daughter Mary.
She was still working at 1 Porchester Villas, in 1901 but was now a Cook and working for Mary Simmons (41).
The 1911 census again records her as a Cook, working for Mary Simmons, (address recorded as “Porchester”, Newtown Road, Newbury, Berkshire)
Her mother Eliza died aged 85 in 1916. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd December.
The 1921 census records again records Elizabeth working for Mary Simmons a General Domestic Servant, in Newtown Road.
Elizabeth died aged 63 on the 10th August 1936, at 5 Bolton-place, Newbury, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th August.
Probate: PRUDUE Elizabeth Mary of 18 Jubilee-road Newbury Berkshire spinster died 10th August 1936 at 5 Bolton-place Newbury Administration Oxford 18th September to John Purdue retired postman. Effects: £107 2s 8d
