ODDFELLOWS' FUNERAL
The funeral of Mr. John Allen Payne, of the Bridge Brewery, took place on Monday afternoon at Newbury Cemetery and was attended by a large number of the “Jack of Newbury” Oddfellows, of which society the deceased had been a member for some years, The service was read by the Rev. W. Pheasant, curate of St Nicolas Church.
Among those attending the funeral besides the deceased's relatives, were Grand Masters Walters and Burton and Noble Grand Mayo.

John Allen Payne was born in 1842 in Newbury the son of Benjamin and Harriet, nee Allen, Payne.

In the 1851 census he was recorded with his parents Benjamin and Harriet and siblings Benjamin aged 16, William aged 14, Harriet aged 12 and Eleanor aged 4 and Benjamin’s brother John Payne in Mills Yard off Cheap Street in Newbury with Benjamin senior a chair maker and turner.

 

His mother Harriet died in July 1858 aged 54 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 30 July. A few years later in the 1861 census John was living with his father and sister Harriet aged 20 together with Benjamin’s brother John in Cheap Street in Newbury with Benjamin a chair maker employing 11 men and Harriet was recorded as a housekeeper for her father.

 

Eliza Lipscombe was born in 1845 in Newbury the daughter of John and Eliza, nee Pyke, Lipscombe. In the 1851 census she was recorded with her parents and siblings in Northbrook Street in Newbury with John a chair maker. Ten years later in the 1861 census she was still living with her parents and siblings in Keens Yard off Northbrook Street with Eliza recorded as a chair bottomer.

 

John Payne and Eliza Lipscombe married in 1865 in Newbury. Sadly, Eliza died in September 1866 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 26 September.

 

Two years later John married a widow Elizabeth Ann Brookes on 10 May 1868 at St Mary in Speenhamland. Elizabeth Ann Paulin was baptized on 26 March 1837 at St Nicolas in Newbury, the daughter of Thomas, a shoemaker, and Elizabeth Ann Paulin. Elizabth was recorded with her parents and siblings living in Bartholomew Street in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, her father Thomas was recorded as a shoemaker in both. She married Francis Henry Brookes in 1859 in Newbury. In the 1861 census Francis and Elizabeth were recorded in Jack of Newbury Street in Newbury along with daughter Agnes aged 6 months and Francis was a journeyman silversmith. Francis died in June 1865 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 29 June.

 

In the 1871 census John and Elizabeth along with their daughter Bertha aged 2 and Elizabeth’s daughter Agnes were living in the Victoria Arms, Marsh Street in Newbury. John was a journeyman chair maker and publican. Ten years later in the 1881 census John and Elizabeth along with children Agnes aged 20, Bertha aged 12, Edith aged 9, George aged 7 and Caroline aged 5 were living in the Cricketers Arms, Marsh Street in Newbury. John was as a publican.

 

In the 1891 census John and Elizabeth along with children Edith aged 19, George aged 17 and Caroline aged 15 were living Northbrook Street in Newbury. John was a publican, Edith a dress maker, George a grocer’s assistant and Caroline a milliner.

 

John died on 22 December 1891 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 December after a service at St Nicolas. A short report of the funeral appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 31 December 1891. It mentioned he had been a Jack of Newbury Oddfellow and a large number of Oddfellows attended including Grand Masters Walters and Burton.

 

A few days later in the Newbury Weekly News of 9 January 1892 it was reported there had been a temporary transfer of the Bridge Brewery to the widow of John Allen Payne.

 

Elizabeth was recorded as a visitor at 7 Donnington Square in the 1901 census, her occupation was retired nurse (sick). Ten years later in the 1911 census she was recorded as a housekeeper to George Lake in Fair Cross in Hermitage.

 

Elizabeth died on 19 November 1916 aged 80 while living at Brooklyn, Hambridge Road in Greenham. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 22 November.
