Charles Henry Osgood was the son of Charles Anslo Osgood and Hannah MacGraw.

Hannah was the daughter of Hames and Sarah Harding MacGraw of Berks.  She died in the workhouse in Newbury in1904

Charles is believed to have been an Oddfellow.  He married an Edith and  is buried with his son Herbert Gerald who died 1903  10th june aged 12y 9 m

Charles Anslo Osgood

c1817-1891

Charles Anslow was baptised on the 25^th October 1817 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Osgood

His father John was baptised in 1768 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Philip and Mary Osgood (nee Walker) who were married on the 15^th August 1763 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. John died aged 69, he was buried on the 4^th March 1837 at St Mary the Virgin Speen. (The are two records for a John Osgood in Speenhamland in the in Berkshire Pigot’s Directories 1830-1842, John Osgood, a Tailor and John Osgood, Waterloo Game Cock. Either could be Charles’s father as later records record Charles’s brother William Herbert Osgood as a Tailor and his mother Mary as a Publican).

His mother Mary was born c1775 (Place unknown). Mary died aged 67, she was buried on the 3^rd December 1842 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen. (In Berkshire Pigot’s Directories 1830-1842 Mary was recorded as a Beer Retailer).

John and Mary also had the following children:

Ann born 15^th December 1802, baptised 9^th January 1803 at St Nicolas Newbury

Henry born 7^th September 1805, baptised 8^th September 1805 at St Nicolas Newbury

Thomas Willliam baptised 26^th June 1809 at St Mary the Virgin Speen

John Edward born 28^th January 1810, baptised 25^th February 1810 at St Nicolas Newbury

William Herbert born 26^th August 1812, baptised 11^th October 1812 at St Nicolas Newbury

Ellen Elizabeth baptised on the 24^th June 1821 at St Mary the Virgin Speen (died aged 19 in 1840, buried 25^th April at St Mary the Virgin Speen)

In 1841 Charles (20) was recorded as a Journeyman Grocer, living in Speenhamland, Berkshire with his mother Mary (60), a Publican, his brother William (25), a Journeyman Tailor, his sister Ann (30) and a James Botham (30), a Journeyman Baker. (Surname recorded as Orgood on ancestry)

Charles Anslo married in 1848.

John 1851 (died aged 18, buried in the NRC on the 19^th October 1869)

The 1851-1891 census records record Charles as an Auctioneer’s Porter.

In 1851 Charles (33) and Hannah (22) were living in Bradley’s Yard, St Mary Hill, Newbury.

The 1861 census records Charles (43), Hannah (30) and their children, John (9), Ellen (7), Hannah (5), Charles (2) and James (5 months), living at Play House Yard, Speen, Berkshire.

In 1871 Charles (53), Hannah (39), Ellen (17), Charles (12) and Ann (4), were recorded living at 2, Pantings Buildings, Newbury.

The 1881 census records Charles (64), Hannah (49), their daughter Janet (8) and their twin granddaughters (recorded as their daughters) Ann and Ellen (1), living at 2, Comptons Buildings, Newbury.

(Ann and Ellen were the illegitimate twin daughters of their daughter Hannah, they were baptised on the 20^th August 1879, at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

In 1891 Charles (74), Hannah (58) and their daughter Janet (19) were living at 9, Church Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.

Charles Anslo Osgood died aged 75 on the 15^th December 1891, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st December

The 1901 census records Hannah (72) living on her own means, at 8, Jack Street, Newbury.

Hannah died aged 76 on the 1^st September 1904, in the Newbury Workhouse, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd September.
