Charles Phillips was born on 17 February 1807 in Newbury and baptized on 5 April 1807 at St Nicolas in Newbury, the son of Paul and Ann.

 

Charles married Maria Cannings on 31 May 1830 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Maria was born circa 1811 in Newbury.

 

In the 1841 census Charles and Maria were recorded living at Faircross, Newbury with children Charles aged 8, Henry aged 6 and Emily aged 4, Charles was a journeyman tailor.

 

Ten years later in the 1851 census Charles and Maria were recorded living in Bartholomew Street in Newbury with nine children. Charles was a tailor and the three eldest children were also working, eldest son Charles was a baker, son Henry a tailor and daughter Emily a dressmaker.

 

Maria died in October 1856 aged 45 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 6 October.

 

Charles was living in Withmills Yard off Bartholomew Street in 1861 along with his children Edwin aged 17, Sarah aged 14 and Julia aged 10. Charles was a journeyman’s tailor while Sarah and Julia were scholars.

 

Charles remarried on 21 March 1863 at St John in Newbury to a widow Maria Powers, nee Sayers. Maria was born circa 1811 in London and had married James Powers on 5 August 1832 at St Nicolas in Newbury. James died on 15 October 1858 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 October.

 

In the 1871 census Charles and Maria were recorded living in Bartholomew Street in Newbury and Charles was still working as a tailor. Then ten years later in the 1881 census Charles and Maria were living at 8 Raymond’s Almshouses in Newbury, Charles’s occupation was recorded as almsman.

 

Charles died on 4 January 1887 aged 79 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 10 January. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 13 January 1897 as below.

 

PHILLIPS – Jan. 4, at 8 Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury, aged 79. Deeply lamented by his family and friends.

 

Maria was recorded living by herself at 8 Union Court in Newbury in the 1891 census and living on her own means. She died seven months after the census on 22 November 1891 at Bartholomew Street aged 79 and she was buried on 25 November at Newtown Road Cemetery. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 26 November as below.

 

PHILLIPS – Nov. 22, at Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Maria, widow of the late Charles Phillips, aged 79.

 

Charles’s parents Paul and Ann were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 December 1861 and 25 July 1856 respectively.
