Martha, her parents, siblings and early life:

Martha was born in Ecchinswell, Hampshire, she was baptised on the 12th November 1854 in Ecchinswell, the daughter of Edward (Labourer) and Elizabeth Whale (nee Hunt) who were married on the 2nd July1847, in the Chapel of Ecchinswell, Hampshire.

Martha’s father Edward was baptised on the 18th May 1823 in Wanborough Wiltshire, the illegitimate son of Mary Whale.

Her mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 16th March 1828 in Kingsclere, Hampshire the daughter of John (a Labourer) and Sarah Hunt (nee Butler) of Ecchinswell, who were married on the 28th November 1822 in Kingsclere, Hampshire.

In 1861 Edward (39), an Agricultural Labourer, Elizabeth (34) and their children, Charles (10), George (8), Martha (6), Elisha (4) and Walter (1), were living at Bushnell’s Cottage, Ecchinswell.

The 1871 census records Edward (47) as a Farm Carter, living at 3, Quarry Cottage, Ecchinswell, with Elizabeth (44), George (18), Martha (16), Edward (9), Mary (6) and Mark (4).

Date: 15th July 1875

Groom: Charles Hemmings, aged 20, bachelor, occ: Sawyer, abode: Ecchinswell

Bride: Martha Whale, aged 21, spinster, abode: Ecchinswell

Fathers: Benjamin Annetts, a Sawyer and Edward Whale, a Labourer

Bride and Groom made their mark

(Charles Emmans was born c1855 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire, the illegitimate son of Ann Emmans. His mother Ann married Benjamin Annetts in 1856 (marriage registered in Newbury). Charles was later known as both Charles Annetts and Charles Hemmings

The surname Emmans has been mistakenly transcribed as Hemmings (various spellings) in later records.)

 

Charles and Martha had the following children:

Louisa Annetts born in 1876 in Greenham
Ernest George Annetts (aka George) born c1879 in Greenham

Edward Frank Himmons born 1882, baptised 13th July 1884 in Ecchinswell, as Edward Frank Hemmings

Kate Hemmins born 1885, baptised 9th August 1886 in Ecchinswell, as Kate Hemmings

Harry Albert Hemmins born 1888, baptised Harry Albert Hemmings 18th November 1888 in Ecchinswell

The 1881 census records Martha Emmins (25) living in Brocks Green, Ecchinswell, Hampshire with Charles (26), an Agricultural Labourer, Louisa (5) and George (2).

In 1891 Martha Hemmings (39) was recorded living at 2, Greenham Cottages, Greenham, Berkshire, with Charles (30), a General Labourer, and their children, Lousia (17), George (12), Edward 9), Kate (5) and Harry (3).

Martha Hemmins died aged 39 on the 12th September 1891, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September.
