THE LATE MR. ALEXANDER BURNS
Another prominent tradesman has passed away in the person of Mr. Alexander Burns, tailor, of Bartholomew Street, who died on Friday evening, at the age of 51, after a somewhat lengthened illness.
Mr. Burns, who was a Scotchman by birth, had been a resident in Newbury for about thirty years, and prior to commencing business as a tailor, was manager to Mr. Nicholls, clothier, of the Market place. Although not a member of any public body, he took a great interest in local affairs.
He was a prominent Freemason, being one of the oldest Past Masters of the Lodge of Hope, and for several years he held the office of treasurer to the Lodge.
He leaves a widow and four children. The funeral took place, at the cemetery yesterday, the ceremony being performed by the Rector. In accordance with the wish of the widow the Masonic brethren did not attend in the clothing of the Order, but a large and representative body of Masons were present, including the Mayor, (Bro. Stephen Knight), Bro. the Rev. J. Atkins, Bro. Wm. Knight, Bro. Stickland, Bro. John Rolfe, Bro. Beames, Mr. Lamb and several personal friends.
The mourners were Mrs. Burns (the widow) and her sons and daughters, Miss Cribb, Miss Sutton, Mr. W. Miller, and Mr. Geo. J. Cosburn. The coffin was covered with floral wreaths and crosses.
