Arthur Charles Cockell Was Born On The 15th December 1877 In Newbury Berkshire; He Was The Fifth Child Of William And Mary Cockell. By The Age Of 2 The Family Had Moved To Enborne Row, Wash Water, On The Outskirts Of Newbury. In 1888/9 The Family Returned To Newbury Living At Adeys Buildings, Stroud Green. Arthur Is Shown In The 1891 Census As Working As A General Labourer, And On The 1901 He Is Listed As A Labourer On The Great Western Railway. In Fact, Arthur Appears To Have Worked For The G.W.R. Most Of His Working Life, In 1911 He Was Listed As A Packer, (Probably Something To Do With The Tracks) And On His Death Certificate His Occupation Is Railway Platelayer.
Around 1920 Arthur, along with his brother Albert who was also unmarried went with their widowed mother to live at 53 Greenham Rd, Stroud Green, Newbury. This property was next door to their married sister Mary who occupied number 51. Arthur and Albert continued to live at 53 after the death of their mother in 1925, and both remained bachelors.
Arthur died on the 17th October 1935 in Newbury District Hospital of a cerebral haemorrhage aged 57. His funeral service was held on 21st October at Stroud Green Methodist Chapel, followed by burial at Newtown Road Cemetery, the vicar was Frank Manning.
Arthur was given a horse drawn funeral, the undertakers being T.Plumb of Greenham Rd; the total cost including the purchase of the ground at the cemetery and ministers fees was £20-0-6p.
The inscription on his gravestone reads.
