Hannah Reid
1829-1890
Hannah was born in Newbury she was baptised on the 15th October 1829 at St Nicolas Church Newbury and was the daughter of Thomas and Jane Lloyd (nee Crosswell) who were married on the 18th September 1821 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Thomas was a Gardener, he was born c1800 he died aged 49 in Newbury and was buried on the 3rd February 1849 at St Nicolas Newbury. Jane was born in Newbury c1798 she died aged 60 in Newbury and was laid to rest in the NRC on the 19th March 1858. Jane had an illegitimate son, George Crosswell born c1818 in Greenham Berkshire.
In 1841 Hannah (11) was recorded living with her parents in Back Lane Newbury. The 1851 census also records Hannah (21) living in Back Lane, she was working as a Dressmaker and was living with her mother Jane (53).
Hannah married in 1856.

Witnesses: Eliza Harris and George Crosswell (Hannah’s half -brother)

George was born in Kirkcudbrightshire Scotland and was the son of George (born c1790 in Dumbfries Scotland, died in Carlisle Cumberland in 1866) and Jane Reid (nee McCall) (born c1793 in Wigtown Scotland, died 1858 in Carlisle Cumberland).
Hannah and George had the following children (all born in Newbury except Margaret, she was born in Thatcham):

James 1862 (died aged 13 months buried in the NRC on the 7th March 1863)

Thomas 1867 (died aged 14 months buried in the NRC on the 6th June 1868)
Walter 1868 (died aged 3 weeks buried in the NRC on the 31st July 1868)

The 1861 census records George (36) as a Woollen and Linen Draper, living in Cheap Street Newbury with Hannah (32) and their children, Jane (3), William (2) and George (3 months) also living with them were two boarders and two servants.
The 1871 census records George (48) as a Draper living in Bartholomew Street Newbury with Hannah (41), Jane (12), William (11), George (10), Margaret (7), Catherine (6), Ellen (5), Lloyd (1), two servants and three Draper’s Assistant’s.
The 1881 census records George (56) as a Draper living in Bartholomew Street Newbury with Hannah (51), Jane (22), Catherine (16), Ellen (15), Lloyd (10) and Gordon (8) plus two boarders and one servant. Margaret (17) was not at home when this census was taken she was visiting an Ann Easter (70) in Bartholomew Street, and was recorded as a Milliner.
Hannah died aged 61 on the 18th December 1890 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd December.
The 1891 census records George (66) as a Draper living at 63 Bartholomew Street Newbury with his children, Jane (32), a Principal of a School, George (30), a Traveller, Catherine (26), a Governess, Helen (Ellen) (25), a Governess, one servant and seventeen boarders (all females ranging from 4 – 19 years of age all recorded as scholars)
The 1901 census records George (76) as a Retired Draper, living alone at 2 Bartholomew Almshouses Newbury. He died aged 84 on the 20th July 1909 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th July
