John Richards

1851-1890

John, his parents, siblings and early life:

John was baptised on the 28th December 1851, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Charles (a Corn Dealer) and Jane Richards (nee Lawrence) who were married on the 12th September 1846, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

His father Charles was baptised on the 26th November 1820 in Melksham Wiltshire, the son of John (a Labourer) and Sarah Richards (nee Redman) who were married on the 13th June 1819, in Melksham. Charles died aged 36 on the 5th February 1857, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th February.

His mother Jane was baptised on the 21st May 1822 at St James, Leckhampstead, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Mary Lawrence (nee Chamberlain) who were married on the 13th December 1813 in Leckhampstead. Jane died aged 73 on the 18th June 1892, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th June.

John’s siblings were (all baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury):

Mary Jane, baptised 29th August 1847 (died aged 7 in 1855, buried the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th February)

Charlotte, baptised 29th April 1849

Elizabeth, baptised 27th October 1850 (died aged 75 in 1926, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st October)

In 1851 Charles (30), a Corn Porter, Jane (28), Mary (3), Charlotte (2) and Elizabeth (7 months) were living in Newbury, Berkshire.

The 1861 census records John (9) living in Corn Wharf, Newbury, with his widowed mother Jane (39), a Corn Factor, and his sisters Charlotte (12) and Elizabeth (10).

The 1871 census records John (19) as a Corn Salesman, living in Corn Wharf, Newbury with Jane (50), a Corn Porter, and his sisters Charlotte (21) a Pupil Teacher and Elizabeth (20).

John in later life:

John married in 1878

Place: St George, Hanover Square, Middlesex

Date: 28th December 1878

Groom: John Richards, full age, bachelor, occupation, Corn Merchant, abode, Hatchet’s Hotel

Bride: Amy Frances Pocock, minor, spinster, abode, Newbury, Berks

Fathers: Thomas Pocock, a Hotel Proprietor and Charles Richards, a Corn Merchant

Witnesses: I. Wyatt and W. Bowles

(Amy Frances was born on the 7th November 1861 in Little Dalby, Leicestershire. She was baptised in Little Dalby, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Anne Pocock (nee Geary) who were married in 1858, in Reading, Berkshire).

John and Amy had the following four children (all born in Newbury):

Charles, born 1880, baptised 10th December, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Archie, born c1882, baptised 3rd March, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Cecil Stewart born 1885 (died aged 1 in 1886, buried 2nd August at St Mary, Thatcham)

The 1881 census records John (29), a Corn Salesman, Amy (19), their daughter Dorothy (1) and their son Charles (6 months), living in Exchange Buildings, Newbury.

John died aged 39 on the 8th December 1890, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th December.

John’s widow later in life:

The 1891 census records Amy (29) living on her own means, in Bartholomew Street, Newbury with her children, Dorothy (11), Charles (10) and Archie (9)

Amy remarried in 1894

Marriage details:

Date: 9th October 1894

Groom: George Thomas Dorrington, aged 33, bachelor, occupation, Clerk, abode, Bartholomew Street Newbury

Bride: Amy Frances Richards, aged 32, widow, abode, West Field, Newbury

Fathers: Joseph Dorrington, a Bootmaker and Thomas Pocock, a Hotel Proprietor

Witnesses: William James Pocock, Bessie Plenty, Grace Plenty and E. J. McLennan

(George Thomas was baptised on the 25th December 1861, in Corley, Warwickshire, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Dorrington)

George and Amy had the following two children (both born in Newbury):

Cecile Margaret born 1899

The 1901 census records George (39) as a self-employed Commercial Clerk & General Accountant, Amy (39), Gladys (5), Cecile (1) and Dorothy Richards (21) a Milliner’s Assistant, living at 1 Granville Terrace, Newbury.

In 1911 George (47) was working as a Head Clerk for a Brewery, living at 14 Gloucester Road Newbury with Amy (47), Gladys (15), Cecile (110 and Dorothy (29) a Hospital Nurse.

In 1921 Amy was recorded as a Boarding House Keeper, living at 15 Craven Road, Newbury with her daughters Dorothy, a Nurse, working at Blackheath Nursing Home and Gladys, a General Clerk. George was recorded as a Clerk, working for H. & G. Simonds Ltd, Brewers at The Tamra Brewery, Devonport. He was a boarding at 14 Herbert Place, Devonport

The Berkshire Electoral Registers 1840-1965 record George and Amy living at 254 London Road, Newbury (1926-1933) 196 London Road, Newbury (1934-1936) and 1 Bartholomew Street, Newbury (1937)

Amy died aged 75 on the 29th August 1937, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her 1st husband John Richards, on the 3rd September.

George Thomas Dorrington died aged 76 the following year, on the 25th March. He as laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th March.
