JAMES THORN*

THE LATE MR. JAMES THORN*

-The funeral took place on Monday, at the Cemetery, of Mr. James Thorn, of Bartholomew-street, who, as our obituary column last week announced, died on the 17th inst. at the advanced age of 78.

Mr. Thorn was among our oldest and most respected tradesmen, having been born in the town, and having conducted the well-known boot and shoe-making establishment in Bartholomew-street for over forty years. The business can be traced back for 200 years, and under the management of the late Mr. Thorn acquired a high and widespread reputation for excellence and durability of manufacture. Even in these days of “ready-made boots”,  Mr. Thorn's business - which is continued by his son, Mr. Charles Thorn, for many years associated with his late father - has still held its ground, his customers residing in all parts of the British Empire, the establishment in Bartholomew-street thus maintaining in an obtrusive manner, the credit of the town of Newbury.

Mr. Thorn has taken but little part in public affairs, and for several years resided at East Woodhay, whence he returned to Newbury on the decease of his wife, since which time he has been in a gradually declining state of health.
