Ann Marshall
She was baptised on 16 January 1826 in Faringdon, Berkshire. Her parents were John and Elizabeh Mayow. Her father was an agricultural labourer. There is a marriage record of a John Mayo (sic) marrying Elizabeth Maccabee on 23 March 1822, Great Faringdon – could be her parents.
On 25 July 1847, in Thatcham, she married Charles Marshall, a journeyman plumber, born in Thatcham. From the 1851 census they had travelled to London where their first child, Eliza Ann, was born on 15 November 1850. Her baptism record confirms the address as 2 Clarence Grove. However by the 1851 census they had moved to 17 Mayfield Street, Hackney, Tower Hamlets.
By the 1861 census, they had returned to Newbury and they were living at The Cock Public House, 108 Shaw Road, Speen. Charles is working as a plumber and glazier. Research has not been able to establish when/whether the licence was transferred to him. Eliza Ann is 10 years old and a scholar.
Two more children followed: Mary Elizabeth born in 1862 and Charles Oliver born in 1863. From the 1871 census the family were still living at the Cock Public House and Ann’s father, John Mayow, now aged 76 years, was staying with them. He died 2 years later in 1873 4Q in Newbury.
On 19 April 1875, the licence of the Anchor Inn, Northbrook Street, was transferred from George Lake to her husband Charles Marshall. He died on 13 March 1878 and the licence of the Anchor Inn was transferred to Ann.
For the next few years she continued to be the landlady. She is listed in the 1887 Kelly’s Directory. The 1881 census records that her daughter Mary Elizabeth, aged 19, is a milliner. Her son Charles Oliver has followed his father and become a plumber. Her grandson Charles James Hancock, aged 4 years and born in Newbury, is staying with her. He is the son of her daughter Eliza Ann who married Frederick James Hancock, a carpenter, in 1875 in Newbury.
She died on 19 May 1890, aged 63 years, at 18 Denmark Road and she was buried on 23 May.
