Elijah Smith
c1804-1890
Elijah was born Woodspeen, Berkshire. He married Ann Newbury on the 31st January 1837 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire and they had one son, Thomas, born in 1838.
The 1841 census records Ann (40) as a School Mistress living in a Yard off Bartholomew Street, Newbury with her son Thomas aged 3. Elijah doesn’t seem to be recorded in the census for this year.
In 1851 Ann was working as a Nurse in the household of Cornelius Doe and family in Northbrook Street, Newbury. Again Elijah doesn’t seem to be recorded in this census. Thomas doesn’t seem to be recorded in this census either.
The 1861 census records Elijah (56) as a Master Tailor living in Withmills Yard, off Bartholomew Street, Newbury with Ann (61) and Thomas (22), a Carpenter.
Ann died aged 63 in 1862, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th November.
Elijah remarried in 1863, his 2nd wife was Mary Ann Harris (nee Stagg) a widow. (Mary Ann was born c1817 in East Woodhay, Hampshire. She married Jacob Harris in 1848. Jacob was a Greengrocer/Grocer trading in Bartholomew Street, Newbury. He died in 1862).
Elijah and Mary continued in the grocery business, both the 1871 and 1881 census records record them in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.
Elijah died aged 86 on the 6th March 1890, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th March.
Mary Ann (74) was recorded in the 1891 census as a Greengrocer at 112 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.
She died aged 75 in 1892 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th April.
