John, his parents, siblings and early life:

John was born in Newtown, Hampshire, he was baptised on the 9^th August 1850 in Newtown, the son of John (a Bricklayer) and Clara Selina Owen (nee Batten) who were married on the 3^rd June 1846 in Newtown.

His father John was baptised on the 23^rd January 1825, in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the son of John (a Bricklayer) and Mary Owen. John died aged 87 in 1912 (death registered in Kingsclere)

His mother Clara Selina was baptised in 1819 in Enborne, Berkshire, the daughter of Benjamin and Rosanna Batten (nee Crocker) who were married in 1800 in Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire. Clara Selina died aged 56 in 1876 (death registered in Newbury)

John and Clara also had the following children:

In 1851 John (26), Clara (33), Frank (4), Olive (3), John (8 months) and Clara’s mother Hannah Batten, were living in Newtown, Hampshire.

The 1861 census records John (36), Clara (43), Frank (14), John (11), Selina (8) and William (5), living at Newtown Common,

The 1871 census records John (20) working as a Bricklayer. He was still living in Newtown (in a Cottage) with his parents John (46) and Clara (52) and his brother William (15).

Bride: Elizabeth Stillman, full age, spinster, abode, Newbury

Fathers: John Owen, a Bricklayer and George Stillman, a Carpenter

Witnesses: Caroline Stillman and ? Owen (? Possibly Alan Owen)

Bride and Groom both signed

(Elizabeth was born on the 22^nd May 1850, in Newbury, the daughter of George and Jemima Stillman (nee Twitchin) who were married in 1849 (marriage registered in Newbury)

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

Alice 25^th April 1881

Selina Maria 1^st April 1883

Mabel 1885

Florence 1887

In 1881 John (30), Elizabeth (30) and their children, Ada (5), Ann (4), John (2) and an aunt, Maria Twitchen (60) were recorded living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury.

John died aged 39 in 1890, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th February.

The 1891 census records Elizabeth (40) as a Charwoman, living at 7, Northbrook Place, Newbury, with her children, Olive (15), Alice (9), Selina (80, Mabel (6) and Florence (3).

In 1891 Elizabeth (50) was recorded living at 5, Brighton Terrace, Newbury with her daughters, Olive (25), a Schoolteacher’s Assistant, Flora (13) and a lodger.

The 1911 census records Elizabeth (60), Alice (29) and Lena (Selina) (28), both Elementary School Teachers, living at “Caerleon” Kingsbridge Road, Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Elizabeth as Incapacitated, living at 63, Bartholomew Street, Newbury with her daughters Alice and Lena.

Elizabeth died aged 90, on the 21^st April 1941, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24^th April with her parents George Stillman (buried 1879) and Jemima Stillman (buried 1903)
