Kate was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of James and Sarah Leader (nee Copas) who were married in 1874. (See marriage details below)

Kate died aged 10 months, on the 12th January 1890, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th January.

Kate’s family:

Kate’s father James was baptised on the 3rd March 1850, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Sarah Leader (nee Deavin) who were married on the 17th October 1848, at St Mary, Kintbury.

Kate’s mother Sarah was baptised on the 25th May 1845, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of James (a Horse Keeper) and Mary Copas (nee Witts) who were married on the 30th June 1832, at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.

Marriage details:

Place: St Nicolas Church, Newbury

Date: 13th September 1874

Groom: James Leader, full age, bachelor, occupation, Ostler, abode, Newbury

Bride: Sarah Copas, full age, spinster, abode, Newbury

Fathers: Henry Leader, a Labourer and James Copas, a Coal Merchant

Witnesses: James Copas and Ellen Rivers

Sarah also gave birth to the following children:

A stillborn baby (buried in the NRC on the 26th July 1875)

A stillborn baby (buried in the NRC on the 3rd June 1876)

Rose Elizabeth, 1877

A stillborn baby (buried in the NRC on the 26th February 1884)

Mary, 1885

The 1881 census records James (31) as a Surgeon’s Coachman, living in Cromwell Place, Newbury, with Sarah (34) and their daughter Rose Elizabeth (3).

By 1891 James (40) was working as a General Labourer, living in Daisy Cottages, Greenham, Berkshire, with Sarah (47) and their two daughters, Rose Elizabeth (13) and Mary (6).

The 1901 census records James (54) as a Borough Scavenger, living in Newmarket Street, Newbury, with Sarah (56), Rose Elizabeth (23), a Tobacco Shop Manageress and Mary (15).

James died aged 60, in 1903. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd January 1904. At the time of his death James was recorded living at 6 Market Street, Newbury.

The 1911 census records Sarah (66) living at 6 Market Street, Newbury, with her son-in-law, Frederick Warwick (29), a Mail Cart Driver, her daughter Rose Elizabeth Warwick (33), her grandson Frederick Warwick (2 years 6 months). Also recorded in the household were two visitors. Her married daughter Mary Haines (25) and a Walter William Pittifer (24).

Sarah died aged 67 in 1914, in Play Platt, Theale, Berkshire. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th July.
