Sarah Stratton

Sarah was baptised on the 22nd March 1807, in Thatcham Berkshire, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward (nee Palmer) who were married on the 19th September 1804, in Thatcham.
Sarah Ward married William Arnold on the 29th August 1830, at St Nicolas, Newbury.
William was a Bargeman. He was born c1808.
William and Sarah had the following three children:
Esther Jane, baptised on the 10th April 1831, at St Nicolas, Newbury (died aged 4 years 5 months, buried 1st June 1835, at St Nicolas Newbury)
William, born c1833, (died of smallpox, aged 2 years 2 months, buried 13th June 1835, at St Nicolas Newbury)
William John baptised on the 8th April 1838, at St Nicolas, Newbury.
In 1841 William (30), a Bargeman, Sarah (30) and their son William (3), were recorded living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, Berkshire.
Sarah was widowed in 1848, William died aged 40. He was buried on the 29th December, at St Nicolas, Newbury.
The 1851 census records Sarah Arnold (42) as a Laundress, living in Hazell’s Yard, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with her son William (13), an Errand Boy and a lodger, Lucy Buckeridge (6).
Sarah remarried in 1852.

(Michael Stratton was baptised on the 4th July 1802, in Inkpen, Berkshire, the son of John and Phoebe Stratton (nee Bennett) who were married on the 12th October 1797, in Shalbourne, Wiltshire. Michael married Sarah Rawlins on the 31st May 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury. They had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury: Eliza, 10/3/1830, (died aged 3 weeks, buried 17/3/1830) Mary Ann, 27/3/1831, (died aged 1 month, buried 8/4/1831) John, 9/12/1832, George 18/1/1835. They also had Charles, born c1837, Emma, born 1838, William, born 1840 and Elizabeth, born 1846. Michael was widowed in 1848, Sarah died aged 40, she was buried on the 8th April, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Abode at time of death, Greenham)
Sarah was widowed again in 1859, Michael died aged 56. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th January.
The 1861 census records Sarah Stratton (54) as a Charwoman, living in West Mills, Newbury. Also recorded in the household were her son William (23), (William Arnold, recorded as William Stratton) a Bricklayer’s Labourer and her stepdaughter Emma Stratton (22), a General Servant.
Sarah’s step-daughter Emma Stratton died aged 26, in 1865, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd June.
In 1871 Sarah Stratton (64), a Charwoman, was recorded living at 24, West Mills, Newbury. Her granddaughter Alice Jane Arnold (5), was recorded living with her.
The 1881 census records Sarah Stratton (71), living at 5, Trafalgar Place, Newbury. Her son William Arnold (42), an Auctioneer’s Porter and her granddaughter Fanny Arnold (8) were recorded living with her.
Sarah Stratton died aged 79, in 1889, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th July.
