ELIZABETH GRACE

Sudden Death.- An inquest was held at the “Bacon Arms” Hotel on Monday evening by Dr.Watson  J.P., borough coroner, on the body of Elizabeth Grace, an old woman, who died suddenly on Sunday evening. Mr. J. Pounds was foreman of the jury, and the following evidence was given:- James Bolton, a labourer living in Tayler’s – buildings, Speenhamland, said the deceased had been living with them for the last three years. She was his wife’s grandmother. On Sunday evening they went to chapel leaving her at home, returning a little after eight, she was then in her usual health, and not apparently in any suffering. About five minutes after they got in-doors, the deceased said ‘Oh dear,’ and fell forward, his wife catching her in her arms. She only gave a few gasps and almost instantly died. She had had no doctor since she had been with them, and Mr. Palmer, who came soon, pronounced her dead. She had had her usual meals with enjoyment that day. She was 75 years of age. Mr Montagu Palmer said he was called on Sunday evening to see the deceased, and found her lying on the floor quite dead. There were no marks of violence on her, and he had no doubt from her advanced age that she died from failure of the heart’s action. He had no professional knowledge of the deceased, and therefore could not give the certificate. The deceased was totally blind. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.
