A RECORD BENEFICIARY  -

There ahs recently died at Raymond's Almshouses, Miss Hester Elizabeth Dibley, who had been an inmate for 43 years, during the whole of which time she had been a confirmed invalid, her illness dating, she always affirmed, to a cold she caught on the Queens Coronation day, when her shoes were lost in the crowd.  This venerable spinster represented one of th oldest families in Newbury.  A direct ancestor of the deceased Morgan Dibley, was baptised in the Parish Church on 9th march 1539, and the name runs in all the registers down the succeeeding centuries.  One of her relatives figures as the butcher in the well known scene of making the cloth for the celebrated "Newbury Coat"; and many members of the family have been honourably  associated with the past interests in the town.

This obituary entry is awaiting verification.
