Recorder's Notes | NB Rosa is shown as Andrews? in Mrs P's transcription but free BMD clearly gives Allder in death listing. Possibly Mrs Patterson misread the damaged lead letters Allder for Andrews. She has also Misspealt Allder as Alder in her records. As late as the 1901 census Rosa is listed as Rosa Allder housekeeper to her taxidermist brother Ralph. |

Ralph Alder/Allder

Ralph, his parents, siblings and early life:
Ralph was baptised on the 22nd February 1824 at t Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of James, a Victualler (trade directories record him at the Greyhound, Bartholomew Street, Newbury 1839-1848) and Mary Alder (nee Preston) who were married on the 15th April 1820 at St James the Less, Winterbourne, Berkshire.
His father James was born c1788 in Donnington, Berkshire. James Allder died aged 75 in 1863, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th January.
His mother Mary was born c1790 in Shaw, Berkshire, she was baptised (as Molly) in 1790 at Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Mary Preston. Molly Allder died aged 80 in 1871, she was buried on the 31st March at St Andrew, Boxford.
James and Mary also had the following children:
Mary Anne baptised 1820 in Winterbourne
Henry baptised on the 22nd September 1822 at St Nicolas, Newbury (died aged 9 months, buried 6th May 1823 at St James the Less Winterbourne)
Martha baptised on the 21st May 1826 at St Nicolas, Newbury
James baptised on the 9th March 1828 at St Nicolas, Newbury
Henry baptised on the 30th May 1830 at St Nicolas, Newbury
The 1841 census records James (50), a Publican, Mary (50), Mary (20), James (12) and Henry (10) living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury. (No record of Ralph found)
In 1851 Ralph (27) was recorded as a Journeyman Painter, living with his parents James (63) a Sawyer & Publican and Mary (61), his brothers James (23) a Sawyer, Henry (21) a Journeyman Carpenter, his cousins, Frederick Preston (21), a Millwright Journeyman and Amelia Preston (16), a General Servant, in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

(Mary Ann was baptised on the 22nd May 1831 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Harriet Callis (nee Piper) who were married in 1815 in East Woodhay, Hampshire)

The 1861 census records Ralph (37), a Poulterer and Bird Stuffer, Mary (28), Florence (7), Harry (5), Rosa (3) and Tom (10 months), living at 30 Northbrook Street, Newbury.
In 1871 Ralph (47), a Poulterer, was recorded living at 70 Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Mary (38), and their children Henry (15), Rosa (13), Tom (10) and Ralph (7).
The 1881 census records Ralph (57) as a Poulterer, he was still living in Northbrook Street with Mary (48) and their two sons Tom (20), a Painter and Ralph (17), a Butcher’s Clerk.
Ralph Allder died aged 64 on the 22nd September 1888, he was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th September.
The 1891 census records his widow Mary (55) as a Poulterer and Naturalist living in Northbrook Street, Newbury. Her son Tom (30) was recorded living with her and was also recorded as a Poulterer and Naturalist.
Mary Allder died aged 64 on the 27th September 1896, she was laid to rest with her husband Ralph on the 30th September.
