Transciption: | JAMES GOATLEY FATAL RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT AT GREENHAM WHARF. inquest was held at the " London Apprentice" Saturday by H. Watson, Esq M.D. J. P., Coroner, the body of James Goatley. aged 73, who died at the Newbury District Hospital late on Friday night from the effects of an accident which befell him on February 9th. whilst working at Greenham Wharf. Mr. Samuel Hassell was chosen the foreman of the jury which sat to hear the evidence : John Kingh, a sawyer, said he and his mate were employed sawing at Mr. Copas at Greenham three weeks ago last Thursday. They were pulling an elm log on the rollers, when it rose near the saw-pit. The deceased came to help, and the log being too much for them began roiling. Jamming deceased’s leg against the post of the saw-pit. They extricated him as soon as possible and removed him to the Hospital. The leg was not broken. Deceased was a “thatcher" and was not used to sawing work. Mr. Henry Copas, chair manufacturer, at Greenham Wharf, said that the deceased had a job of " thatching" to do for him. On February 9th, deceased was waiting for some straw. and in the interval went towards the sawpit, where he was asked to help get a log of timber on the pit. The log rolled and deceased got his leg jammed between the wood and the sawpit. It did not seem such a bad injury at first. He went and asked deceased who was doubled up what was the matter, and he said, "I don't know master. ' Sergt. Borlase said from the enquiries he had made at the Hospital, the cause of death was to the system. The jury returned a verdict of “accidental death" from an injury, which caused a shock to the system. |
