Henry Ballard
c1823-1887
Henry, his parents, siblings and early life:
Henry was baptised on the 22nd December 1823, in Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Hannah Ballard (nee Tidbury) who were married on the 25th December 1816, at St Andrew, Bradfield, Berkshire.
His father Thomas was baptised on the 2nd August 1795, Leckhampstead/Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of William and Charlotte Ballard (nee Brooker) who were married on the 7th November 1782, in Leckhampstead/Chieveley.
His mother Hannah was born on the 15th August 1792, in Thatcham, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 26th August, 1792, in Thatcham, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Tidbury (nee Jayes) who were married on the 25th November 1791, in Thatcham. Hannah died aged 69, she was buried on the 21st June 1863, at St Bartholomew, Oare.
Thomas and Hannah also had the following children:

James, baptised 29th August 1819, in Oare/Chieveley
Sarah, baptised 24th June 1821, in Oare/Chieveley
Charlotte, baptised 7th May 1826, in Oare/Chieveley

David, baptised 1st May 1831, in Oare/Chieveley
Charles, baptised 11th August 1833, in Oare (died aged 7, buried 30th Nov. 1840, at St Mary the Virgin, Chieveley)

Harriet, baptised 1st January 1843, in Oare
The 1841 census records Henry (15), an Agricultural Labourer, living in Curridge, Chieveley, Berkshire, with his father Thomas (45), his mother Hannah (45), his brothers, James (20), an Agricultural Labourer, George (10), David (10), Joseph (3), William (3) and his sister Charlotte (15).
Henry in later life:
Henry married Caroline Pike/Pyke on the 15th November 1845 in Oare/Chieveley, Berkshire.
(Caroline was baptised in 1826, in Oare/Chieveley, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Lucy Pike (nee Sellwood) who were married on the 11thJanuary 1824, in Chieveley).
Henry and Caroline had the following children:
Amos, birth registered in the December quarter 1845 as Amos Ballard, mmn Pike. Amos was baptised as Amos Pike, 1st March 1846, in Oare, the son of Caroline Pike.

Mary Louisa, born 1848, baptised 3rd September
Sarah, born 1849, baptised 24th July 1850
Harriet, born 1851 (died aged 17, buried 6th March 1868, at St Bartholomew, Oare)
Charles born 1853, baptised 5th June
Thomas, born 1855, baptised 3rd June
Alice Hannah, born 1858, baptised Alice Anna, 3rd October
David, c1860, baptised 1st April 1860
Twins: Matthew and Mark, born 1861, baptised 2nd March 1862
Eliza, born 1865, baptised Eliza Jane, 1st October

The 1851 census records Henry (28), as a Pauper, Farm labourer, living in Cold Ash, Thatcham, Berkshire, with Caroline (26) and their children, Amos (6), Maria (5), Mary (3) and Sarah (2).
In 1861 Henry (37), an Agricultural Labourer, Caroline (35), Maria (14), Mary (13), Sarah (11), Harriet (9), Charles (8), Thomas (5), George (4), Alice (3) and David (1), were living in Crab Tree Road, Curridge, Chieveley, Berkshire.
The 1871 census records Henry (47), a Labourer, Caroline (45) and their children, Thomas (16), a Labourer, Alice (12), David (11), a Labourer, twins, Matthew and Mark (9), Eliza (5), Charlotte (3) and Harriet (1), living Curridge, Chieveley, Berkshire.
Henry was widowed in 1875, Caroline died aged 49, she was buried on the 12th September, at St Bartholomew, Oare.
Henry (57), an Agricultural Labourer and his children, George (24), an Agricultural Labourer, Eliza (15), Charlotte (13) and Harriet (11), were still living in Curridge, in 1881.
Henry died aged 63, in the Newbury Workhouse, on the 5th August 1887. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th August.
