Edmund Stevens was born in 1856 in West Tisted in Hampshire. He married Mary Ann Purdue on 7 May 1880 at St Mary in Kilburn. Mary was born in 1853 in Overton.

 

Edmund and Mary had eight children.

 

Frederick George born in 1882 in Overton

Charles Edmund born in 1883 in Kingsclere

Rose in 1887 born in Newbury (twin of Sidney)

Sidney in 1887 born in Newbury (twin of Rose)

Daisy born in 1888 in Newbury

Lily born in 1892 in Newbury

Violet May born in 1894 in Newbury

Ethel Amelia born in 1897 in Newbury

 

Sadly, three of the children died very young. Sidney died shortly after his birth and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 4 May 1887.  

 

His twin sister Rose died aged one and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 31 December 1888. 

 

Lily died aged 21 months and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 17 August 1894. 

An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 16 August 1894 as below.

 

STEVENS – Aug. 14, at Church Lane, Newbury, Lily Stevens, aged 21 months.

 

In the 1891 census Edmund and Mary with children Frederick, Charles and Daisy were living at 87 Bartholmew Street in Newbury with Thomas recorded as a watchmaker.

 

Thomas and Sarah moved away from Newbury after the death of Lily. Edmund died on 19 August 1900 at 9 Andover Road in Winchester.

 

Mary was recorded in the 1901 census in Whitchurch in Hampshire with daughters Daisy, Violet and Ethel. Ten years later in the 1911 census Mary was still in Whitchurch with daughters Violet and Ethel. In the census it was recorded Mary was being maintained by her sons while Violet was a jam bottle labeller.
