Transciption: | Funeral of Mrs. Joseph Lewis The death of Mrs. Joseph Lewis took place on Thursday at 79 Gloucester-road Newbury. Mrs Lewis was born at Aldbourne in 1950 and for over 60 years had been a member of the Northbrook-street Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, who was formerly a local preacher of the same church and who for the past six years has been an invalid. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis celebrated their golden wedding seven years ago. There are three sons and two daughters. The eldest son, the Rev. Edwin Lewis, D.D., is in America, and the second son Captain A.N. Lewis, who retired from the army four years ago, is in South Africa. The first part of the funeral service was held at the Northbrook-street Methodist Church, the Rev. J. Riach officiating. The hymns sung were "Rock of Ages" and "For ever with the Lord." The mourners were: Mr. F. J. Lewis (son) , Mrs. S. Downey and Mrs H. P. Tallyn (daughters), Mrs. T. Herring (sister), Mr. H. P. Tallyn (son-in-law, Mrs. Harvey (sister-in-law), Mrs. Pennock (niece), Mrs.Tallyn (sen.), Mrs S. Smith, Mr. J. Siney, Mrs. J. Brittain, Misses K. and S. Brittain, Mr. and Mrs. Potter and Mrs. Copas. In addition to the immediate mourners, a number of friends attended the service in the Church and at the graveside. Flowers were sent by many mourners including friends, neighbours, and dear ones abroad. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Eggleton and Tallyn. The deceased died on 12/7/1934 at the age of 83. |
