Three men, Alfred Moss, George Crook and Richard Wickens were working on the roof of the Corn Exchange. They were fixing lead: Wickens had gone to get nails whilst Moss and Crook were positioning the lead. The two lost their footing and fell and together with the planks ended up in a passageway with the adjacent building, which belonged to Mr G Cox. A roll of lead went through a skylight of Cox’s building, narrowly missing him and his wife. Mr Cox and Mr Smallbone rushed to the passageway to find Moss in a pool of blood with serious head injuries and Crook lying on his back. They were rushed to hospital, however Moss who was 27 years old, died the following morning, leaving two young children.
