Francis Salter was born circa 1819 in Greenham, the son of John and Elizabeth. He was baptized on 24 January 1819 at St Mary in Greenham. In the 1841 census he was recorded with his parents along with brother Henry aged 15 at Goldings Yard in Greenham and he was a blacksmith.

 

Charlotte Powers was born circa 1818 in Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah. She was baptized on 27 May 1818 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Charlotte had a daughter Esther in 1837, who was baptized on 5 February 1837 at St Nicolas in Newbury, as the daughter of Charlotte Powers and Henry Holt. In the 1841 census Charlotte was recorded with her parents along with sisters Mary aged 13, Harriet aged 9 and Maria aged 8 in Back Lane in Newbury, her father Thomas was a bricklayer.

 

Francis and Charlotte married in 1841 in Newbury.

 

In the 1851 census Francis and Charlotte along with Charlotte’s daughter Esther and a niece Elizabeth Wheeler were living in Cambers Yard off Cheap Street in Newbury, Francis was recorded as a coal merchant’s labourer.

 

Ten years later in the 1861 census Francis and Charlotte along Esther were living in Back Lane in Newbury, Francis was still a coal merchant’s labourer. The three of them were still living in the same house in 1871 now in Ham Road in Greenham with Francis a labourer and porter, Charlotte’s occupation recorded as “laundry” and Esther a dressmaker.

 

Francis and Charlotte were living by themselves at Falcon Court in Newbury in the 1881 census with Francis a corn porter.

 

Francis died on 23 September 1886 and he was buried on 29 September at Newtown Road Cemetery.

 

Charlotte along with a boarder was living in Northcroft Lane in Newbury in the 1891 census and she was working as a laundress.

 

An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 12 November 1891 that Charlotte had been elected to the vacant Raymond’s Alm House by the rector. She was recorded at 2 Raymond’s Alms House in the 1901 census living with her sister Mary Ann Powers.

 

Charlotte died 5 April 1902 while still living at Raymond’s Alms House and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 April.

 

Charlotte’s daughter Esther Smith was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 23 January 1929 and her sister Mary Ann Powers on 11 June 1914.
