Adelaide Sarah Pariftt
1851-1886
Adelaide Sarah was born on the 7th March 1851. She was baptised on the 27th March 1855 in Ovington, Hampshire the daughter of Thomas and Ann Parfitt (nee Melmoth) who were married on the 15th December 1840 in Charton Horethorne, Somerset.
Adelaide’s father Thomas was born c1818 in Shepton, Somerset.
Her mother Ann was born c1819 in Shepton, Somerset
Thomas and Ann also had the following children (all baptism records record Thomas as a Yeoman):
Edwin Richards 1841, baptised 16th December 1841, in Thornford, Dorset
Alfred Hilborne 1843, baptised 27th February 1844, in Thornford, Dorset (died aged 4 in 1847 in Hampshire)
Albion born 26th December 1846, baptised 27th March 1855, in Ovington
Isabella Ann, born 15th March 1849, baptised 27th March 1855, in Ovington
Theresa Ellen 26th January 1853, baptised 27th March 1855, in Ovington
The 1851 census records Thomas as a Farmer of 666 acres, in Easton, Hampshire, employing 10 labourers. The census for that year records Thomas (33), Ann (34), Edwin (9), Albion (4), Isabella (2), Adelaide (1 month) and two House Servants, living on the farm.
Adelaide’s mother Ann died aged 40 in 1858 (death registered in Frome).
Her father Thomas (46) was recorded in the 1861 census as a Brewer, employing 3 men, he was living in Back Lane, Frome, Somerset, with his children, Albion (14), Isabella (12), a Governess and a General Servant. Adelaide (10) and her sister Theresa (8) were recorded as visitors at Bayclift Farm, Hill Deverill, Wiltshire, the farm of James Parfitt (39) and his wife Ellen (28).
Adelaide’s father Thomas died aged 52, on the 5th March 1864. Letters of Administration of his Personal Estate (under £800) record the guardianship of his four youngest children, Albion, Isabella Ann, Adelaide Sarah and Theresa Ellen to their uncle, Edmund Parfitt.
The 1871 census records Adelaide (20) as a Barmaid at the “Coach and Horses” Hotel, St Mary le Strand, Westminster, London.
In 1881 Adelaide (30) was working as a Governess for a William Leonard Holmes A’Court, a Magistrate and his family, in the High Street, Heytesbury, Wiltshire.
(Adelaide’s married brother Edwin Richards Parfitt and his family had moved to Newbury c1884 so possibly Adelaide moved to Newbury between 1881-1886 to live with them).
Adelaide died aged 35 on the 16th April 1886. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th April.
Her sister Theresa Ellen died aged 34, on the 2nd March 1887, in Bramshaw, Hampshire (death registered in Alderbury, Wiltshire). Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with Adelaide on the 5th March.
