THE LATE MR. HALLIWELL. —Mr. H. G. Halliwell, whose remains were laid to rest in the Newbury Cemetery on Saturday last, was well known and respected in Lambourn, he and his family having resided at Lambourn for nearly 30 years, in the well-known rustic cottage on the Lambourn Place estate, the deceased being coachman during that period to H. Hippisley, Esq. He had only recently gone to Newbury to reside, and it is probable that the severance of his long connection with Lambourn Place affected his highly excitable disposition to such a degree as to hasten his end.

Transciption: | The next landlord, Henry Halliwell had no better luck, he too died after only 18 months in charge. Henry had been a coachman at Lambourn Place for 30 years before he took on the Rose & Thistle -the local paper suggested the move to the bright lights of Newbury was too much for his 'highly excitable disposition' and may have hastened his end. His widow, Elizabeth, took on the licence and broke the tragic sequence; she remained as licensee until 1893 retiring five years before her death. |
