Transciption: | GEORGE WESTCOMBE In a public capacity Mr. Westcombe was a Trustee of the Municipal and a member of the Corporation, having occupied a seat at the Council since 1860, and had he lived would doubtless have been elected in due course to the mayoralty of the Borough. He was attentive to and conscientious in the discharge of his public duties, and enjoyed the esteem of all parties. By his removal the Wesleyan denomination will lose a liberal supporter, and an efficient local preacher. |

The articles below contain information about George Westcombe.
George Westcombe senior was a Brewer and a Methodist Minister. This seems a contradiction.
The Methodists were in the leadership of the Victorian Teetotal Reforms but it was not necessarily the rule that all Methodists had to be Teetotal as is still the case today. John Wesley himself was known to have consumed alcohol but he preached about over consumption.
The other George Westcombe on the memorial was one of the many progeny of George Westcombe and Sarah Westcombe nee Bradfield. (Incidentally for the younger George I think it should read “Jun” as in Junior and not “June”. George junior's first wife Harriet Maria is shown on the plaque. After her death he married Bessie Dixon.
I am attaching a copy of a portrait which we own of George senior, resting his arm on a Bible. Also attached is a copy of his death certificate.
After George senior’s death the Brewery was run by Sarah and her son James Edward Westcombe, Connie’s Great Grandfather. Following Sarah's death James Edward continued with the Brewery with his son Percy John (Connie's grandfather) assisting. By 1911 James Edward was running a Tobacconist Shop in Kingsclere and Percy John was working as a Cellar Beer Inspector. He then went on to run his own Off Licence in Wimbledon.
