Edward Brown

1867-1868

Edward was born in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 13th October 1867, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Thomas and Sophia Jane Brown (nee Challis).

Edward died in 1868. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th July.

Edward’s family:

His father Thomas was born in 1840, he was baptised on the 5th April 1840, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Benjamin and Maria Brown (nee Patrick) who were married on the 27th July 1818, at St Nicolas Newbury.

His mother Sophia Jane was born in c1844, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 31st March 1844, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Challis (nee Milsom) who were married on the 18th December 1837, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

His parents married on the 25th December 1863.

Edward’s siblings were:

Thomas William, 4th July 1864

Elizabeth, 6th June 1866

Edward’s father Thomas died aged 28 on the 6th February 1869. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th February.

In 1871 his mother Sophia (27) was recorded as a Housekeeper, living in Alton Place, Newbury, with her widowed father, William Challis (55), formerly a Bricklayer, her younger sister, Harriet (16), her son, Thomas, (6), her daughter Elizabeth (4) and a lodger.

Sophia remarried on the 26th December 1873, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Her 2nd husband was Henry Crook.

The 1881 census records his mother Sophia (36), a Laundress, his brother Thomas Brown (16), an Errand Boy, his sister, Elizabeth Brown (14), a Nursemaid, Henry Crook (42), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, his uncle, Thomas Crook (32) a Bricklayer’s Labourer and his aunt, Harriet Crook (25) (nee Challis, his mother sister) and a lodger, living in Alton Place, Newbury

Henry Crook died aged 48 on the 18th December 1887. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st December.

The 1891 census records Edward’s mother Sophia (46), a Laundress, his widowed aunt, Harriet Crook (28), a Charwoman, his brother Thomas Brown, (26), a Bricklayer and his cousin Elizabeth Ellen Crook (8), (his aunt Harriet’s daughter) living at 6 Park Street, Newbury.

Sophia (57), now retired, Harriet (48), a Charwoman and Elizabeth Ellen (19), an Upholsteress were recorded living at 6 Park Street, Newbury, in 1901. They were also recorded living at 6 Park Street in 1911.

Edward’s mother Sophia died aged 75, on the 21st December 1920, at the home of her married daughter, Elizabeth Adams. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th December.
