Stained Glass Window Removed for Restoration

The stained glass window in the cemetery chapel has been removed and taken away for restoration

The Stained-glass in the Cemetery chapel was removed and taken away for restoration on Tuesday (2nd July)

The window was erected in 1875 to the memory of Henry Godwin, a solicitor who was a key player in the establishment of the Newbury Cemetery Company by Act of Parliament in 1847. He died in 1874 and the window was installed by his wife, Martha. Henry is buried in the cemetery directly opposite the chapel doors.

The window "The Resurrection" was made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne in London. We are told it is a very good example of their work.

Newbury Town Council have given the go-ahead for the restoration, using allocated funds and supported by Greenham Common Trust. There is still time to make a donation towards the restoration at the Findmeagrant website (see below). When re-installed the window will be protected against vandalism.

Donations can be made at http://www.findmeagrant.org/wberks/browse.aspx WB10380 (keyword = cemetery)
