Chapel window to be removed

Restoration works go ahead

The stained glass window in the chapel is to be removed in early July.

The window was erected in 1875 to the memory of Henry Godwin, a solicitor who was a key player in the establishment of the Newbury Cemetery Company by Act of Parliament  in 1847. He died in 1874 and the window was installed by his wife, Martha. Henry is buried in the cemetery directly opposite the chapel doors.

The window "The Resurrection" was made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne in London. We are told it is a very good example of their work.

Newbury Town Council have given the go-ahead for the restoration, using allocated funds and supported by Greenham Common Trust. There is still time to make a donation towards the restoration at the Findmeagrant website (see below). When re-installed the window will be protected against vandalism.
