Return of Plaque Found in Cemetery
A Memorial Plaque found in the cemetery has been returned to its home town of Thatcham.
The portion of the Memorial plaque to A B Turner that was found in Newtown Road Cemetery by Elizabeth Capewell and Hazel Russell has been returned to its original home in Thatcham and presented to the Town Council there on December 4th. Those present were Mayor John Boyd, Town Clerk Elaine Hare and Historian Nick Young who took part in a ceremonial handover by Elizabeth where she described how she and Hazel had found it and rescued it from its location under another gravestone at NRC. There has already been some interest from a website called “Memorials to Valour” which is researching into recipients of the Victoria Cross and Elaine Hare has advised us that the plaque will be shown in the Council Chambers in Thatcham. It is hoped that the remaining half of the plaque will turn up at some stage, maybe even in our Cemetery! |
