Martha Rachel Collier Knapp was born in Ashmansworth to a labourer. She was a servant before marrying Samuel Rogers, a groom born in Ireland. They lived in Leicester, where their sons were born, and Brighton, where their daughter was born. Martha was widowed between 1881 and 1891 and lived in Newbury, working as a charwoman. Before her death she lived in Church Almshouses, Newtown Rd. In her will she left £125 to her daughter Eliza Martha, married to Arthur Henry Humphreys, who erected her headstone.
