The Adey sisters were daughters of Joseph & Mary Ann, nee Leonard, Coal Merchants of West Mills, Newbury. They were a large family with servants. Father Joseph died when the sisters were young & their mother continued the business until younger brother Rupert took over. An older brother, Joseph, also ran a coal business in West Mills. The girls never married and were recorded as having no occupation while living at home though perhaps helped their mother with the family buiness & household duties. Augusta was later a Companion to a woman in Winchester & retired to 'Eddystone', Chesterfield Rd, Newbury where she died leaving c£660 to brother Rupert. Mary Ann became a Housekeeper to her widowed brother Rupert in St Ann's, Craven Rd where her sister Louisa was also living in 1911. Louisa worked as a Companion in Shaftesbury, Dorset & Bath. Later Mary Ann & Louisa lived with widowed brother Rupert John at 32 Craven Rd, owned by Mary Ann. Louisa died at Craven Rd leaving £779 to brother Rupert. Mary died at 1 Highfield Rd though lived at 32 Craven Rd. Rupert & his wife, Fanny are buried in Ch5(C), their older brother, Coal Merchant Joseph is buried in Ch10(C) with his infant son Clifford Plummer Adey. Their Uncle Thomas Leonard with his wife & son and his sister Ellen Leonard are buried in ChNW8 & Aunt Jane Leonard in NE25(A). Source: Ancestry records.
