From top of headstone: In Affectionate Memory of/ Penelope/ the beloved wife of/ John Portsmouth/ of Chieveley/ who fell asleep Sept. 19th. 1879./ "For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice/ of the Archangel, and with the trump of God; and the Dead in/ CHRIST shall rise first./ Then we which are alive and remain/ shall be caught up together with/ them in the clouds to meet the/ Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord." 1 Thes. Ancestry research: Penelope, nee Dale, was born 27/3/1837 Kingsclere, so she was 42 when she died. Married John Portsmouth Jan. 1874 Newbury, and they had a son Richard Portsmouth born 1876
