    James Hattatt was the eldest of 10 children of a farmer, James & his wife Patience, in Over Wallop, Hants. He married, first, Harriett Colborn in Highclere, Hants on 22 May, 1851 & they had their son, James Colborn in 1853 & daughter Emily in 1857. He was first a Carrier then a Victualler & lived in Whitway, Burghclere, being Licensee at the Carnarvon Arms. By 1871 they had moved to Thatcham where he worked as the Registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths & Relieving Officer. His obituary says he had previousy been Relieving Officer in Newbury for 22 years. Harriett died in 1874. James then married Hannah Purver, a governess of Newbury & he continued working as Registrar moving to Marsh Cottage off Northbrook St, Newbury, where he died.Hannah continued living at Marsh Cottage with her sister, Sarah Ann,& niece, Sarah Elizabeth until her death. She left over £1300 to her sister and Thomas Hedges Stillman, School Attendance Officer. They were members of the Newbury Presbyterian Church & James had been a Freemason.The Stillmans are buried in the adjacent grave, P(D)2 Sources: NRC Bur Recd; Ancestry records.
