Richard was born in Steeple Ashton Oxon, to a labourer & gardener, where his first job was as an agricultural labourer aged 14. He joined the Railway in 1868 working at Steventon as a Policeman then as a Signalman at Kintbury (Nov 1876) &Twyford (Sept 1878). He married Ann, a labourer's child from Pangbourne in 1880, & transferred to Pewsey (Feb 1884), as a Signalman, becoming a Porter at Farringdon in Nov 1888 after which he resigned. He earned 16/- a week when he first joined the Railway and this rose to 21/- as a Signalman in Pewsey, falling to 18/- as a Porter when he resigned. After that he worked as a Coal Merchant, first near the railway in Bartholomew St, where his sons helped with the business as yard assistants and haulier. In 1901 he had a fruit and coal merchant's shop at 6, Bartholomew St . In 1911 the family lived at 19, Craven St. Ann had worked in West-on-Thames, Kingston as a Ladies Maid to the wife of a Law Publisher before marriage. She bore Richard 4 sons and 3 daughters. When widowed, Ann moved to 16 Berkeley Rd, the home of son Montague and his wife. Cont'd below ...
Annie Amelia was the eldest child of Richard & Ann, born in Twyford where her father had been working as a Signalman on the Railway for 2 years, earning 18/- week. She has no recorded occupation but may have helped her mother keep the busy coal yard, and later the shop, running for the men of the family. Cont'd below
