Gilbert Jones

c1823-1865

 

Gilbert was born in Basingstoke, he was baptised on the 14th March 1823 in Basingstoke and was the son of Hugh & Harriet Jones (nee Biggs) who were married on the 29th May 1817 in North Waltham Hampshire.

Gilbert’s father Hugh was a Green Grocer and in 1841 the family were living in Church Street Basingstoke. Gilbert was not living at home with the family at this time he was living in High Street Andover.

In 1851 Gilbert was working as a Grocer’s Assistant and was back living with the family in Church Street, his father Hugh was working as a Postman.

Gilbert married Jane Windebank on the 5th November 1854 at St Mary’s Guilford Surrey and was a Publican at the time of his marriage.

By 1861 Jane & Gilbert had three children, Gilbert born c1856, Emma Jane born 1858 and Rosa born 1861, the family were living in Newbury (22 West Street) and Gilbert was working as a Corn Dealer’s Clerk.

His daughter Rosa died aged 1 in 1862 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th June. The following year Jane gave birth to another daughter, Helen Biggs.

Gilbert died aged 39 in 1865 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th January. His son Gilbert died aged 9 the same year he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th July.

In 1871 Jane and her two daughters were living in Union Chapel Yard Newbury and Jane was working as a Laundress, she died aged 44 in 1872 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th March.
