Sarah Emeline Stillman (1859 – 1937)

                             Sarah Emeline Stillman was born in 1859 in Newbury with parents William and Sarah Ann (nee Purver) Stillman. She generally used the name Emeline.

In the 1861 census Emeline was living with her parents and other siblings in Bartholomew Street in Newbury. Ten years later in 1871 Emeline was again recorded with her parents in the census along with four siblings living at 6 West Fields in Newbury and she was recorded as a scholar.

At present Emeline cannot be traced in the 1881 census. In the 1891 census Emeline was recorded as a boarder at 5, 7 and 9 Regent Street in London, there were dozens of boarders at this address. She was recorded as a draper’s assistant.

In the 1901 Emeline was recorded with her aunt Hannah Hattatt and her mother Sarah Ann living at Marsh Cottage in Newbury. She had no occupation recorded.

 Ten years later in 1911 Emeline was living with her brother Thomas and sister Elizabeth at Brynafon in Kennet Road in Newbury. Thomas was a school attendance officer with both sisters recorded with private means.

 Elizabeth died 18 February 1914 in Newbury while living at Marsh Cottage and was buried 23 February 1914 at Newtown Road Cemetery. She left a will and probate was granted 5 August 1914 at Oxford to Emeline. The value of the estate was £618 14s 4d.

Thomas died 15 September 1925 in Newbury while living at Marsh Cottage and was buried 19 September 1925 at Newtown Road Cemetery. He left a will and probate was granted 29 October 1925 at Oxford to Emeline. The value of the estate was £996 3s 4d.

Emeline died 7 September 1937 in Newbury while living at Marsh Cottage and was buried 23 February 1914 at Newtown Road Cemetery. She left a will and probate was granted 5 August 1914 at Oxford to Emeline. The value of the estate was £618 14s 4d.

 Emeline’s parents were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, William on 10 January 1905 and Sarah Ann on 28 October 1903. In addition, so were another two of her siblings Alice on 12 April 1879 and Mary Jane on 10 October 1884. Her brother Purver William Stillman died 30 April 1892 in a hospital in Fairhaven, Washington, United States of America and there was a memorial erected at Newtown Road Cemetery in his memory.
