JOSEPH RUSSELL EVANS
Joseph Russell Evans died 19th June 1888, aged 51
Joseph was born in Melksham and was on holiday visiting boyhood friends in Aldbourne, Wilts. when he died suddenly from a heart attack. He was brought back to Newbury from Marlborough in an open hearse by road.
He had lived for many years in the Newbury area before taking on Hilden Manor Farm, Tonbridge, Kent. Many of his children were born when he lived in the Burghclere area, farming 520 acres. From there he moved to Halfway where he farmed 137 acres employing nine labourers and three boys, probably at Benham Grange, Stockcross.
On his way to Wiltshire he spent time with the Midwinter and Joachim families, friends from his days in the area.
His wife Elizabeth was niece to the late Alderman Hale, Lord Mayor of London. She left the farm after Joseph’s death and lived in Reading. She died in Sherborne, Westbury, Wilts and joined her husband and two daughters in Newtown Road Cemetery.
