Mary Ann Saunders

c1809-1884

 

Mary Ann Clack was born in Newbury she was the daughter of Benjamin & Rebecca Clack (nee Barret) who married in Newbury in 1790.

The family were recorded in the 1815 census of Newbury as follows:

Abode: west end of the City Newbury

Rebecca Clack aged 42,    husband a soldier

William Clack aged 21

John Clack aged 18

Thomas Clack aged 7

Mary Ann Clack aged 5

 

Mary Ann married Jabez Ashley on the 14th May 1832 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1841 the couple were living in the City Newbury but by 1851 they had moved to Bartholomew Street.

Jabez died aged 49 in 1858 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th August.

 

Mary Ann remarried in Newbury in 1859 her 2nd husband was James Saunders, a widower but sadly the marriage was not a long one, James died the following year and Mary Ann was left looking after his younger children.

James was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th August 1860

In 1861 Mary Ann was working as an Upholsterer, living in Pleasant Place. In 1871 she was working as a Seamstress, living in Kimber’s Yard and in 1881 she was living in Raymond’s Almshouses Newtown Road Newbury.

Mary Ann died aged 75 in 1884 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st August.
